Skincare 101: Building a Basic Routine for Beginners

Aesthetically Speaking: Are you ready to unlock the secrets to a glowing complexion? If you're new to skincare and feeling overwhelmed by the endless options and advice, don’t fear! In this beginner's guide to skincare, I’ll walk you through the essential steps to building a simple yet effective routine that will leave your skin looking and feeling its best.

Overall, a skincare routine is an essential part of self-care that promotes both physical and emotional well-being. A consistent skincare routine helps keep your skin healthy by cleansing away dirt, oil, and impurities, preventing clogged pores and breakouts.

The first step in building a skincare routine is determining your skin type. Skin type refers to the classification of your skin based on its characteristics and needs. Understanding your skin type the most basic step in selecting appropriate skincare products and developing a tailored skincare routine. Visually inspect your skin in a well lit area. You can do a blotting paper test by pressing blotting paper to different areas on your face to see if it’s oily or dry. Pay attention to your skins sensation throughout the day. There are four primary skin types:

1. Dry Skin: Dry skin lacks moisture and often feels tight, rough, or flaky. It may appear dull and may be prone to sensitivity and irritation.

2. Oily Skin: Oily skin produces excess sebum, leading to a shiny complexion, especially in the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin). It is prone to enlarged pores, acne, and blemishes.

3. Combination Skin: Combination skin exhibits characteristics of both dry and oily skin. Typically, the T-zone is oily, while the cheeks and other areas may be normal or dry.

4. Normal Skin: Normal skin is well-balanced, neither too dry nor too oily. It has a smooth texture, small pores, and few to no blemishes.

Secondly identify your specific skin concerns, such as acne, aging, hyperpigmentation, or sensitivity. What do you need your product to treat? Products are made to treat specific skin concerns so always know WHY you’re using the products. Research your products before wasting your money. I recommend gentle fragrance free products for beginners.

There are 5 basic skincare steps:

Cleanse

Exfoliate

Tone

Moisturize

SPF

Here are some common skincare routine mistakes to avoid:

1. Over-Cleansing: Washing your face too frequently or using harsh cleansers can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness, irritation, and even increased oil production.
2. Skipping Sunscreen: Neglecting to apply sunscreen daily can lead to premature aging, sunburn, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Make sunscreen a non-negotiable step in your skincare routine, even on cloudy days.
3. Not Removing Makeup Properly: Sleeping in makeup or not thoroughly removing it can clog pores, contribute to breakouts, and prevent skincare products from properly penetrating the skin.
4. Over-Exfoliating: Exfoliating too often or using harsh exfoliants can damage the skin’s protective barrier, leading to redness, sensitivity, and inflammation. Stick to gentle exfoliation 2-3 times per week, depending on your skin type.
5. Ignoring Moisturizer: Even if you have oily skin, skipping moisturizer can lead to dehydration and worsen oiliness. Find a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer that hydrates without clogging pores.
6. Not Patch Testing New Products: Introducing new skincare products without patch testing them first can lead to allergic reactions, irritation, or breakouts. Always perform a patch test on a small area of skin before applying a new product to your face.
7. Using Too Many Products: Layering too many products or constantly switching between them can overwhelm the skin and disrupt its natural balance. Stick to a simple, consistent routine with products tailored to your skin type and concerns.
8. Picking at Blemishes: Picking, squeezing, or popping pimples can cause inflammation, scarring, and spread bacteria, making breakouts worse. Practice hands-off skincare and let blemishes heal on their own or seek professional treatment.
9. Neglecting Neck and Chest: The skin on your neck and chest is delicate and prone to aging, yet it’s often overlooked in skincare routines. Extend your skincare products, including cleansers, moisturizers, and sunscreen, to your neck and chest to maintain their youthful appearance.
10. Not Drinking Enough Water: Hydration is essential for healthy skin. Not drinking enough water can leave your skin dull, dry, and prone to breakouts. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
11. Morning Routine vs. Night Routine: Differentiate between morning and night skincare routines. Some products may be too harsh to use more than once a day.

Incorporating a skincare routine accounts for about 70% of your overall skincare success but there’s no substitute for the expertise and personalized guidance of a live skincare professional. Visiting a licensed esthetician or dermatologist allows for a thorough assessment of your skin’s needs, concerns, and goals, ensuring that you receive tailored recommendations and treatments suited to your unique complexion.
